How to define and check rigging stability?

24 March 2023

SUSPENSION DEVICES FOR SUSPENDED PLATFORMS

Lightweight and adjustable, our suspended platforms, designed for professionals in the Building, Industry, Wind Turbine and Elevator sectors, provide numerous solutions for the hoisting of personnel on the work site and necessarily require standard or “custom made” suspension devices. Please also take into account to regularly check your rigging system for stability in order to prevent work-related injuries or accidents.

Depending on the work to be carried out, a suitability study must be conducted beforehand to determine the type and length of the platform as well as the winches and their lifting capacity. This study will also define the appropriate type of rigging and what checks need to be carried out to ensure rigging stability: FIXAPOUTRE S suspension beams, parapet clamps, FIXEO mast system or custom made solutions.

SUSPENSION BEAMS: FIXAPOUTRE

FIXAPOUTRE 6 - poutre de suspension pour accrochage d'apperails de levage de personnes sur toiture

FIXAPOUTRE S suspension beams are the most frequently used. They are used on a roof and must be placed on supports with stable distribution surfaces, able to receive lowering of loads.

Mobile, they must be installed on a raceway.

The ballast weight of each beam is crucial and is calculated according to the following formula :

Mw = ballast value of each beam
WLL = hoist capacity
lo = outreach (distance from fulcrum to suspension point)
Li = distance from fulcrum to rear support of the beam

It is important to check that the area receiving the ballast and the area where the R action is exerted has sufficient resistance. A distribution of the loads will have to be carried out if necessary. It is necessary to use FIXATOR counterweights and secure it to the beam so that it can only be removed by voluntary action (excluding liquids and granulated materials).

We  also recommend to check (see drawing  below) :

  • The counterweights : locking and exact number
  • The slings : are they correctly stretched ?
  • The limit switch stops and the screws on the suspension beams : are they all present?

PARAPET CLAMPS

Console d'acrotète

The parapet clamps operate on the principle of a clamp which is fixed over a wall thickness ranging from 0.15 to 0.50 metres.

It is mandatory to :

  1. Check the capacity/resistance of the parapet ;
  2. Check whether the load permissible by the clamp is suited to the hoist’s maximum capacity ;
  3. Secure the rear part of the parapet clamp on another point of the structure ;
  4. Adjust the centre distance of parapet clamps on that of the stirrups of the suspended platform ;
  5. Protect any sealing coatings to avoid crushing ;
  6. Test the installation after assembly and before use, in accordance with the current regulations ;
  7. Regularly inspect the condition of the various elements of the parapet clamp.

SUSPENDED PLATFORM ON MASTS : FIXEO

FIXEO - plateforme de mât

FIXEO suspended platforms on masts are used when no attachment on the roof is possible.

The base is supported on the ground on four adjustable jack bases. The attachment of the masts is done by anchoring on the facade.

The FIXEO system increases working comfort thanks to greater stability provided by rigid guidance. From 2 to 12 metres in length and up to 100 metres in height, it is possible to use as many masts as required to cover the facade. The platform controls remain independent of one another.

It is mandatory to :

  1. Install bases appropriately on stable and load-bearing ground ;
  2. Fix the anchorings correctly on the wall, according to the characteristics provided for.
